A person with anemia will feel tired and weak because the body’s tissues are being starved of oxygen. In fact, fatigue is the main symptom of most types of anemia. The severity of symptoms is in part related to the severity of anemia. Mild anemia can occur without symptoms and may be detected only during a medical exam that includes a blood test.

Common signs include:

  • Pale complexion
  • The normally red lining of the mouth and eyelids fades in color
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Easy fatigue and loss of energy
  • Shortness of breath and headache, particularly with exercise
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Dizziness
  • Pale skin
  • Leg cramps
  • Insomnia

Symptoms of Anemia in Women:-

Many women do not realize that they have developed anemia. It is not unusual for women with a mild condition to fail to notice any outward symptoms of an iron deficiency. Symptoms of anemia in women include:

  • Fatigue, dizziness, and weakness
  • A paler complexion, most notably in the lips, fingernails and underneath the eyelids
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulties concentrating
  • Heart palpitations
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Abnormal menstruation (either absence of periods or increased bleeding)

Symptoms of Anemia in Children:-

You may recognize some of the following symptoms in your child:

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Pale skin and mucous membranes
  • Rapid heartbeat or a new heart murmur (detected in an exam by your child’s doctor)
  • irritability
  • Decreased appetite
  • Dizziness or a feeling of being lightheaded
